MEDFORD — Nothing can shake Eleanor Staley from her dream of a career in law enforcement.

"This is my profession," the 17-year-old from Medford said. "Nothing screams to me like this does."

Staley is already working on that dream. Recognizing the physical challenges of the profession, she's taken up bodybuilding, running and taekwondo.

As the start of the school year draws near, Jackson County families in need of school supplies can sign up for the back-to-school backpack program offered through the Salvation Army.

People were lined up to drop off their pieced quilts, paper dragons, pickles, panoramas and paintings — among other things — at the Josephine County Fairgrounds Pavilion Friday morning.

Patricia Haskin arrived right at noon and the line was 10 deep as the Pavilion door was opened. She had a two-foot tall crocheted nutcracker under one arm.
